Jerome lives in a little house just off the highway. He has a bit of land that overlooks the river. He owns it free and clear and lives cheap so he only has to work when he wants to. Mostly he just fixes up the house. After 15 years in construction he can definitely fix up his own house. He has a garden and some chickens. He likes to fish.
Three years ago he got rid of his TV, and switched to a dumb phone. He’s never known more peace.

Jackie works at the sheriff’s office as a dispatcher. Today was a typical day in Rotbone. The local loony old lady complaining about a neighbor, a domestic, one OD. Easy shift really. You get used to it. Sometimes they get something exciting like a robbery but mostly it’s just a boring day job.
Ya know, it’s surprising how used to things you get. Jackie remembers a time when she might be shocked that people joked about the junkies around the office, or when the crazies yelling on the phone still bothered her. She used to wince at the casual violence of it all.
Yesterday a woman came in to fetch her boyfriend. She was refusing to press charges despite the black eye and the stitches on her forehead. Jackie had shrugged, not her business, but later that night she cried. When had she gotten so numb?
